Credit Card Fraud and Security - Weak security in payment industry opens door to credit card thefts. More than 70 retailers and payment processors have disclosed breaches since 2006, involving tens of millions of credit and debit card numbers, according to the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse. Meanwhile, many others likely have been breached and didn't detect it. Even the companies that had the payment industry's top rating for computer security, a seal of approval known as PCI compliance, have fallen victim to huge heists. Merchants that decide to hire an outside auditor to check for compliance with the PCI rules need not spend much. Though some firms generally charge about $60,000 and take months to complete their inspections, others are far cheaper and faster. read more

Point Of Sale (POS) and Credit Card Software The term is often used in connection with hardware and software for checkouts, including credit card processing software. POS systems evolved from the mechanical cash registers of the first half of the 20th century. Examples of this type of register were the NCR registers, operated by a crank, and the lever-operated Burroughs registers. These registers recorded data on journal tapes and required an extra step to transcribe the information into the retailer's accounting system. The next step was the NCR Class 5 cash register. In 1973 new registers that were driven by computers were introduced, such as the IBM 3653 Store System and the NCR 2150. Other computer based manufacurers were Regitel, TRW, and Datachecker. 1973 also brought about the introduction of the UPC/EAN barcode readers for credit card software on the POS systems. In 1986, the POS systems became based on PC technology with the introduction of the IBM 4683... read more

Gift Cards, Loyalty Programs and Credit Card Processing Software In marketing generally and in retailing more specifically, a loyalty card, rewards card, points card, or club card is a plastic card, visually similar to a credit card or debit card, that identifies the card holder as a member in a commercial incentives programme. In the United Kingdom it is typically called a loyalty card, in Canada a rewards card or a points card, and in the US either a discount card, a club card or a rewards card. Cards typically have a barcode or magstripe that can be easily scanned into credit card software, and some are even chip cards. Small keyring cards are often used for convenience. read more

Debit Cards and Credit Card POS Software There are currently two ways that debit card transactions are processed by credit card software: online debit cards and offline debit cards. Online debit cards are essentially enhanced automatic teller machine (ATM) cards, as they use the same personal identification number (PIN) authentication system and debits are reflected in the user’s account immediately. The PIN authentication is much more secure than the alternative signature (used in offline debit cards). One difficulty in using online debit cards is the necessity of a separate keypad at the credit card processing software to enter the PIN, although this is becoming commonplace for all card transactions in many countries. Overall, the online debit card is generally viewed as superior to the offline debit card because of its more secure authentication system and live status, which alleviates problems with processing lag on transactions that may have been forgotten or not authorized by the owner of the card... read more

Have Economists Got It Wrong About The U.S.? Five years ago, Federal Reserve head Ben Bernanke said the housing sector wasn't a major economic concern. In fact, most experts failed to see the looming subprime mortgage crisis that sank the U.S. economy. If they were so wrong about the Great Recession, it's possible they could also be blind to a "Great Recovery."
